The Damascus Citadel is a large fortified castle found surrounding the Old City of Damascus and is listed as a UNESCO World heritage Site. This is the only fortress in Syria built on the same level as the city. It was also considered a modern citadel as it contained over 300 arrow slits, twelve colossal turrets and enormous parapets all around.
