Gawa was born into an aristocratic family and was the last heiress in the Chogyal dynasty of rulers who ruled sections of Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya. In 1989, Danny’s mother had met her in Gangtok and instantly liked her and decided to marry Gawa with Danny. Danny met her when she was in the final year of school.
