Shkodër is regarded as the traditional capital of northern Albania, also referred to as Gegëria, and is noted for its arts, culture, religious diversity and turbulent history among the Albanians. - Rozafa Fortress. Every civilisation in Shkodra’s history has used this strategic spot on a craggy hill next to the confluence of the Drin and Bojana Rivers.
- Shkodra Historical Museum. This museum is in a sensational location, on a steep hill overlooking the city. The building is a former Venetian merchant’s house, even including authentic stone fortifications.
- Marubi Photo Collection. Pietro Marubi was an Italian photographer who fled to Shkodra in the mid-19th century for political reasons. He had supported general Giuseppe Garibaldi, who himself had to flee for America after the failed siege of Rome in 1849.
- Lake Shkodra. This expansive lake, the largest in the Balkans, forms a natural boundary between Albania and Montenegro. You could rent a bike in Shkodar to get out there, or catch a bus to the western edge of the city and complete the remaining five kilometres on foot.
- Stroll Down Rruga Kolë Idromeno. One of the first things to do in Shkoder when you arrive is to head right into the center and explore. The center is a pedestrianized area that’s filled with many cute, boutique shops, cafes, restaurants, bars, ice cream parlors, and more.
- Explore the Shkoder Historical Museum. There are lots of great museums in Shkoder, but if you only have time for one, then I recommend you head to the Historical Museum.
- Take a Boat Trip on Komani Lake. A huge part of Shkoder’s appeal is the stunning scenery and nature in this part of Albania. Nowhere is that more apparent than Komani Lake; one of the most beautiful places to visit near Shkoder.
- Visit Albania’s Northern Blue Eye. The Blue Eye in Theth (not to be confused with the Blue Eye near Saranda) is one of the most incredible things to do around Shkoder.

1. Rozafa castle. Rozafa Castle was my favourite thing in Shkoder! Sitting high above the town, it offers incredible views and dates back to the 13th century. The castle is one of the most popular Shkoder attractions and is a must-do when visiting the city.
