    • Spirited Away. Ahh, yes. Sweeping animated landscapes, a minimalist soundscape, and the sweet surrender of a calming Miyazaki storyline. I always turn to a Miyazaki movie when I need something to cheer me up after a long day.
    • Secondhand Lions. Remember when you’d go to your grandparents’ house and sit on their floral couch, all tucked into a handmade quilt? Your Grandpa would sit down on his recliner next to you and regale you with stories of his glory days?
    • The Princess Bride. The king of all “story time” movies, The Princess Bride has collected many a child’s heart over the years. Reminiscent of the peace you felt staying home from school with a cup of chicken noodle soup, watching The Price is Right while you recovered from a sickness, this movie has all the elements to make someone curl even deeper into their blanket nest: A heartwarming story of true love, a gentle giant, and a man on a mission to avenge his father’s death.
    • Everybody Wants Some!! If there’s one thing Richard Linklater is known for doing really well, it’s making movies about, well, nothing. The “slice of life” genre is his forte.
    • Sense and Sensibility. To be fair, almost any authentic Jane Austin adaptation would put most people at ease. Even though Austin’s stories are full of drama, the characters discuss these issues in idyllic natural backgrounds, hardly ever raising their voices.
    • My Big, Fat, Greek Wedding. In most romantic movies, a couple meets and then goes on a roller-coaster ride of emotions, leaving the viewer to wonder if they will get together in the end.
    • Say Anything. This story of first love contains the iconic scene of John Cusack holding up a radio outside of his love interest’s home. Yes, you know Say Anything by heart.
    • Mamma Mia. Can someone experience stress while listening to Abba? It’s just not possible. The music and gorgeous natural setting of Mamma Mia (and don't forget Mamma Mia 2!)
    • The Shawshank Redemption. There’s little not to like about this classic tale of redemption. From the script, to the acting, to the gorgeous score, to the dulcet tones of Morgan Freeman, I find myself coming back to this film a lot—either watching the whole thing at once, or catching snippets via YouTube clips—whenever I could use a little pick-me-up.
    • Coco. Coco has everything you need in a comfort movie: a dramatic and compelling storyline, stunning animation, an adorable elderly character, beautiful music, and an ending that the kids will like and will make the grown-ups cry (happy) tears every single time.
    • A Night at the Opera. The plot of any Marx brothers movie is somewhat inscrutable, but it doesn’t really matter. Groucho and the boys spend the movie running their various scams while a pair of star-crossed opera singers try to make it big and find love.
    • Spirited Away. Hayao Miyazaki’s best film unfolds like a dream. A young girl, Chihiro, is on a road trip with her family. Her parents stop to investigate an abandoned theme park styled like a traditional Japanese bath house and are soon transformed into pigs by a strange spell, thrusting the girl into a supernatural world of wandering spirits, talking animals, and hungry ghosts.

  5. Nov 12, 2022 · There are plenty of movies out there that are calm, feature very little in the way of arguments, or boast barely any moments of actionable conflict. These films are great to de-stress with, usually for the whole family, while still bringing brilliant performances and thrilling stories to the viewer.
