Nov 21, 2017 · Thomson model of atom and Rutherford model of atom are two models proposed by J.J.Thomson and Ernest Rutherford, respectively in order to explain the structure of an atom. The main difference between Thomson and Rutherford model of atom is that Thomson model does not give details about the atomic nucleus whereas Rutherford model explains about ...
Aug 10, 2022 · The goal of each atomic model was to accurately represent all of the experimental evidence about atoms in the simplest way possible. Following the discovery of the electron, J.J. Thomson developed what became known as the "plum pudding" model (Figure \(\PageIndex{1}\)) in 1904. Plum pudding is an English dessert similar to a blueberry muffin.
The scattering model predictions were not considered definitive evidence against Thomson's plum pudding model. Thomson and Rutherford had pioneered scattering as a technique to probe atoms, its reliability and value were unproven. Before Rutherford's paper the alpha particle was considered an atom, not a compact mass.
The History of the Atomic Model: Thomson and the Plum Pudding. Expert. . 1. m. J.J Thomson contributed massively to the model of the atom and the modern day theory. His work involved the use of cathode ray tubes and identifying a particle lighter than the atom itself, the electron. Refresher: The atomic model originated in the 5th century BC ...
Jun 28, 2024 · It is striking that this fundamental development is not associated with any model, let alone a planetary model. In spite of the strong visualization, Rutherford did not appeal to a model. Unlike Thomson, Rutherford determined the fundamental structure of the atom by carefully designed experiments that did not depend on speculation.
Sep 6, 2013 · Thomson's discoveries raised questions concerning the nature of the atom. He demonstrated that the atom is not the simplest unit of matter; rather, it has a structure. Thomson's atomic theory has informally been called the “plum-pudding” model, but the early history of this expression has not been elucidated.

Why did Rutherford use model atoms?
The Rutherford model was devised by Ernest Rutherford to describe an atom. Rutherford directed the Geiger–Marsden experiment in 1909, which suggested, upon Rutherford's 1911 analysis, that J. J. Thomson 's plum pudding model of the atom was incorrect. Rutherford's new model [1] for the atom, based on the experimental results, contained new ...
