I personally think it's neat to have a collection of games on steam, be able to take easy screenshots, broadcast, achievement, easy patches, it's quite convenient, but at the same time it isn't that much better than pirating, so I think it's only worth it to buy games when they are pretty cheap.

You should buy wherever is more convenient to you. Steam has more features and better support overall. Some devs or a representive will engage with the community in the steam forums sometimes, mostly in smaller indie titles, but the DRM free games that GOG has are pretty nice.
