Christian mysticism. Thomas Merton OCSO (January 31, 1915 – December 10, 1968), religious name M. Louis, was an American Trappist monk, writer, theologian, mystic, poet, social activist and scholar of comparative religion. He was a monk in the Trappist Abbey of Our Lady of Gethsemani, near Bardstown, Kentucky, living there from 1941 to his death.

The borough was formed under the London Government Act 1963 in 1965 by the merger of the Municipal Borough of Mitcham , the Municipal Borough of Wimbledon and the Merton and Morden Urban District , all formerly within Surrey .
The Domesday Book, published in 1086 for William the Conqueror, reveals Merton to be the largest community in the area. Mitcham was a small farming community and just 14 people occupied Morden. Merton College was originally founded for 20 fellows, with undergraduates being formally admitted in the early 1380s. Over the centuries, many eminent scholars and cultural leaders have called Merton home.
