It was started as a Joint Stock Company – the 3rd Joint Stock Company and 1st Kudumbayogam Company in Travancore. The two other companies are The Punalur Paper Mills and then The Malayala Manorama.

Its first editor was 24-year old Kandathil Varghese Mappillai, who would go on to become the founder of Malayala Manorama. Bhimji’s paper would maintain very high standards.

Kandathil Varghese Mappillai was the grand son of the founder of the Kandathil Family Mathulla. The First Public Limited Company to be started by a native in the erstwhile Princely State of Travancore was the “Malayala, Manorama Ltd” founded by Kandathil Verghese Mappillai in 1888.
