The fifth of six children, he acquired his school education at Sherwood College, Nainital. Thereafter, he returned to Amritsar for his studies at the Hindu Sabha College.
Sam Singh launched a career in Michigan philanthropy with his first job as a Youth Engaged in Service ambassador. As executive director of the Michigan Nonprofit Association, Singh helped to integrate Campus Compact and Volunteer Centers of Michigan into the larger organization.
