Garhbeta College was founded on 13 August 1948 under the leadership of the freedom fighter Late Gobinda Kumar Singha to impart higher education to the economically backward and geographically remote area of the Midnapore district. The college started with only 50 students in a section of Banerjee Danga High School.

The people of Garhbeta and the adjoining area, mostly poor and illiterate, strongly felt the necessity of kindling light of learning in the remote backward area of Paschim Medinipore and adjoining Bankura and Hoogly Districts and founded the Garhbeta College with their modest means on the 13th August 1948 under the Calcutta University and subsequently was affiliated to Vidyasagar University in 1985.
The Department of History is functioning in our college from the year 1948. From the very beginning the Department was affiliated to the University of Calcutta for the General Course, and Honours Course was affiliated the Calcutta University in the year of 1967.The college was affiliated to the Vidyasagar University in the year 1985.

Aided and affiliated to Vidyasagar University, Midnapore.The institution presently offers Honours courses in thirteen subjects in Arts, Science and Commerce and Office Management and Secretarial Practice (OMSP) as a vocational subject, Professional course, B.PED.
