Udayagiri and Khandagiri caves, formerly called Kattaka Gumpha or Cuttack caves, are partly natural and partly artificial caves of archaeological, historical and religious importance 3 kms south of the city of Bhubaneswar in Odisha, India.
Location of the Udayagiri Caves in relation to Besnagar, Vidisha, Sanchi and the Heliodorus pillar. Udayagiri Caves are set in two low hills near Betwa River, on the banks of its tributary Bes River. [2] This is an isolated ridge about 2.5 kilometres (1.6 mi) long, running from southeast to northwest, rising to about 350 feet (110 m) height.
Located on a 135-foot high hill, these caves encompass 18 in Udayagiri and 15 in Khandagiri, totaling 33 distinct caves. Each cave boasts unique characteristics, showcasing the exceptional artistry of craftsmen from the 2nd century BCE.

The Ananta Gumpha (Snake Cave), Tatowa Gumpha (Parrot Cave), and Navamuni Gumpha (Nine Jewels Cave) are the three most well-known caves in Khandagiri.
The famous Udayagiri and Khandagiri caves are located in the outskirts of Bhubaneswar, the capital city of Odisha. These caverns were made somewhere around the 1st and 2nd Century BC under the commission of King Kharavela of the Mahameghavahana dynasty that ruled Odisha (erstwhile Kalinga) during that time.

There are total 33 rock-cut caves on both the hills out of which 18 caves are excavated on Udayagiri hill while 15 are on the Khandagiri hill. The name Udayagiri means Hill of Sunrise. The Rani Gumpha or the Queen's Cave is the largest and the architectural marvel of the entire complex.
