In the 1880s, Darel Zachary donated part of his farm in East Baton Rouge Parish (about 16 miles north of Baton Rouge) to the Illinois Central Railroad, which built a depot on his former property and effectively established the city. A fire in 1903 nearly destroyed Zachary, but many of its historical buildings remain intact.
