Melbourne was founded on August 30, 1835, by settlers led by John Batman and John Pascoe Fawkner. The settlement was initially known as Batmania, named after John Batman. However, it was later renamed Melbourne in honor of the British Prime Minister at the time, William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne.
