Ribe has a beautiful medieval town center with more than 100 well-preserved old buildings under Heritage Protection. You can just wander around and admire the charming half-timbered houses, that’s what I love to do. I actually live in one myself and they’re just as cozy on the inside.
One of the things you might notice around town is the doors. Like the green main door of the cathedral. If you look right above the door, the relief shows Jesus being taken down from the cross. It’s called “the cat’s head portal”, because of the two lions at each side of the doorway.
If you walk around the cathedral, you’ll see a few statues. There’s one of Hans Tausen(1494–1561), who was a leading figure of the Reformation in Denmark. Another statue pictures Hans Adolf Brorson(1694–1764), who was one of Ribe’s best remembered bishops. Most Danes, myself included, know him mostly for his hymns in the Danish National Church.
