Lloyd’s Register of Shipping, world’s first and largest ship-classification society, begun in 1760 as a registry for ships likely to be insured by marine insurance underwriters meeting at Lloyd’s coffeehouse in London. It is concerned with the establishment of construction and maintenance standards.
Founded in 1760 and reconstituted in 1834, Lloyds Register was amalgamated with the British Corporation, the only other British classification society in existence at that time, in 1949.
