The Bram Fischer Memorial Lecture happens every year at Rhodes House and is in celebration of the life and commitment to justice shown by Bram Fischer (Orange Free State & New College 1931). We welcome a wide range of speakers, but a common thread is justice and Africa.
Rhodes House (University of Oxford), where Fischer was a student, has held an annual Bram Fischer Memorial Lecture to honour his legacy since 2007, a reincarnation of a former lecture in his name hosted by New College.
These Memorial Lectures honour Bram Fischer QC, a South African lawyer who defended Nelson Mandela and other leaders of the liberation movement when on trial for their lives, and who himself died in imprisonment in 1975.
