- Candelaria, located approximately 6.5 miles west of US 95 and 16 miles south and east of Mina in Mineral County, was the center of a historically significant silver mining district in southwestern Nevada. The Candelaria District, first referred to as the Columbus District, emerged after discoveries made by Mexican prospectors in 1864.

May 12, 2019 · Candelaria was presumably named after a mine of that name located in 1885, and also after the catholic Candelmas Day. Metallic City, the “Sin City” of Candelaria, and also known as Pickhandle Gulch, lies 3.4 mile to the south Candelaria. The name, Pickhandle, was derived from the most popular weapon used for settling disputes.
Candelaria was home to many saloons, hotels and restaurants, as well as doctors, lawyers, breweries and a newspaper. The peak population reached 1,500 residents between 1881 and 1883. Candelaria was known as a rough town.
Candelaria, Nevada was no exception. A remote town so isolated that it was cheaper to buy whiskey than water. Though Candelaria may not be as well known as other 19 th century mining boomtowns, its story exemplifies the hard work and perseverance of the Nevada miner.
