So I finally watched The House of the Devil. I really enjoyed it and would rank it among the best horror films of the 00s. In fact, I'd say it was a predecessor to some of the great horror films of the 2010s in terms of pacing, tension-building, and overall weirdness.
The House of the Devil is the horror cinema version of edging. What finally happens at the end is less important than the skillful manipulation of your tension level throughout the rest of the movie. The climax isn't the point, so much as the anticipation of getting there. I like suspense.
