Dec 5, 2021 · Phillips High School was the flagship school in the center of Birmingham. It was named for John Herbert Phillips, the city's highly-esteemed first school superintendent, who served from 1883 until his death in 1921.
The total pattern of segregation was enforced by police action and vigilante terror. On September 9, 1957, the first attempt was made to desegregate Birmingham schools. The Reverend Fred L. Shuttlesworth and his wife Ruby took two of their daughters and one other student to Phillips High School.
