Early life. Isham was born in New York City, [4] the son of Patricia (née Hammond), a violinist, and Howard Fuller Isham, a professor of humanities. [5] He studied trumpet from a very young age, and made his professional debut at the age of 12.
Already an established performer and recording artist, he began to experiment with electronic music. In 1983, Isham released his solo debut album Vapor Drawings. He circulated a demo intended for ECM Records, but fortuitously caught the attention of film director Carroll Ballard.
