Thane (Marathi: [ˈʈʰaːɳeː]; also known as Thana, the official name until 1996) is a metropolitan city located on the northwestern side of the state of Maharashtra in India and on the northeastern side of Mumbai.

Thane district (Pronunciation: [ʈʰaːɳe], previously named Taana or Thana) is a district in the Konkan Division of Maharashtra, India.
Thane for all practical purposes is a suburb of Mumbai. Today Thane city area is 147 km 2 (57 sq mi) with more than 1.2 million population. Thane was inhabited by people of the Agri and Koli communities, and their villages still exist today as "Chendani Koliwada", "Kopari Goan", and "Uthalsar".
Thane is one of the few industrially advanced districts in the state of Maharashtra. Thane district is on the North of Konkan division. According to census 2011, it is third in the state in terms of population. Area of the district is 4214 sq. Km. It is 1.37 percent of the state.

Located on Salsette Island, Thane is a suburb of Mumbai. It is surrounded by the Yeoor and Parsik Hills. The suburb is divided by the Thane creek that drains into the Arabian Sea. Although the culture is predominantly Maharashtrian, one can see influences of the cosmopolitan culture of Mumbai as well.
