Jul 6, 2020 · And while I don’t know that the city *alone* would be a big enough draw for a visit, it sits at the center of Badlands National Park, the Black Hills, and Custer State Park. It’s the perfect charming base for exploring all the gorgeous scenery and interesting culture that western South Dakota has to offer.
- Explore Downtown Rapid City. Every trip should start in downtown Rapid City. With Main Street and St Joseph Street running parallel, this is where you’ll find most of the action in town.
- Get Cocktails at Windsor Block Bar. One of my favorite things we did in Rapid City was stopping into the Windsor Block Bar for a cocktail. It’s a chic watering hole filled with a library of unique liquours and an extensive whiskey selection (600+ liquors).
- Eat Ramen From a Food Network Champion. Who knew you would be transported to Japan with a meal in Rapid City? In comes Bokujo Ramen, the brainchild of Food Network champion Chef Justin Warner.
- Catch Sunrise at Badlands National Park. Just under an hour’s drive from Rapid City, Badlands National Park is one of the top visited spots around for good reason.
- Reptile Gardens. The Reptile Gardens is home to lizards, snakes, crocodiles, parrots, Komodo dragons, insects, and amphibians. Many of the animals are featured in entertainment such as the Gator Show, Snake Show, and Birds Show.
- Badlands National Park. Rapid City makes an excellent base camp for Badlands National Park. It's just over an hour's drive to the Ben Reifel Visitor Center at the east end of the park, passing by several access points along the way.
- Bear Country USA. Bear Country USA is located south of Rapid City. It is a drive-through wildlife park. The landscape of meadows and pines allows visitors to see North American black bears, wolves, mountain lions, elk, buffalo, deer, bighorn and Dall sheep, and Rocky Mountain goats.
- Chapel in the Hills. Chapel in the Hills is a replica of a famous 12th-century Borgund Stave Church in Norway. This unique-looking building features intricate wood carving, Norse dragonheads, Christian symbols, and pegged construction.
