So just to double check, my previously described method of inputing it into steam makes the code invalid? if you own that game and use its key it won't be used you can still use it again.

   I would think there’s a way to check if a key has been used or not by an Authenticator of some sort, if you have extra keys for example ones from humble bundle or a site similar, so you can check without having to redeem it.
