There are 26,081 (56.9%) Black or African American people in the neighborhood of Roxbury. Asian alone is a total of 1,345 people (2.9%). Two or more races were reported by 1054 people (2.3%).
The majority race in Roxbury overall is black, making up 33.0% of residents. The next most-common racial group is hispanic at 27.7%. There are more black people in the central areas of the neighborhood.
May 24, 2024 · Today, Roxbury is the heart of Black culture in Boston. This former farming community is home to the Shirley Eustis House. It’s the nation’s only remaining country house that a British Royal Colonial Governor built.
Jun 14, 2019 · As Latinos moved into Boston in greater numbers in the 1970s and ’80s, Roxbury became more heterogeneous. In 1990, the neighborhood was 79 percent African American, 14 percent Latino and 3 percent white. Today, Roxbury is 53 percent black, 28 percent Latino and 12 percent white.
Jan 31, 2023 · Starting in the 1940s, the Second Great Migration of African Americans from the Jim Crow South to northern cities made Roxbury home to a growing number of African Americans, and by 1960 predominantly white Roxbury had become a predominantly Black community.
The free black community that took roots on the north slope of Beacon Hill in the 1800’s left Beacon Hill and moved to the South End, then Lower Roxbury (“in town”) and finally throughout Roxbury, especially “the hill” the highland area south of Dudley Square.
