UNCG is one of the U.S. News & World Report’s 2023 best colleges in North Carolina. For the fifth consecutive year, UNCG is a top ranked North Carolina institution for social mobility. The media outlet ranks UNCG’s undergraduate teaching No. 2, and the nursing program as No. 2 in the state.
As late as 1968, the historically white UNC campuses had black enrollment of only 1.7%. In 1970, the United States Department of Health, Education, and Welfare sent letters to the UNC system's three "main" campuses (UNC-Chapel Hill, UNCG, and North Carolina State University) suggesting that a statewide desegregation order might be forthcoming.
The UNC System is home to five historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs): Elizabeth City State University, Fayetteville State University, N.C. A&T State University, NC Central University, and Winston-Salem State University. It is also home to the only state-designated historically American Indian university – UNC Pembroke.
