El Cid is a 1961 epic historical drama film directed by Anthony Mann and produced by Samuel Bronston. The film is loosely based on the life of the 11th-century Castilian knight and warlord Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, called "El Cid" (from the Arabic al-sidi, meaning "The Lord").

For me, El Cid is a wonderful movie, great story, magnificent action scenes and shot very close to where the original saga is believed to have taken place. I'll never forget the image of the dead El CID riding along the beach into eternity on his magnificent white horse.
El Cid is a glorious reminder of the kind of epic filmmaking that no longer exists. No battle scene has surpassed the thrilling sweep of the siege of Valencia. Even Cecil B. De Mille in his prime could not match the opulence of the costumes and sets.
Although it is a bit long, "El Cid" is is definitely worth the viewing. Charlton Heston and Sophia Loren put in great performances in this sweeping epic. There is quite a bit of violence in the form of massive battles and one on one duels, but it is not gratuitous and there is little blood shown.

While El Cid is not an accurate biography, it is a lavish, epic production. Using similar methods as those used for Lawrence of Arabia, the restorers of El Cid have achieved impressive results.
