It's much better practice to specify the size of any image containers on a page as it will allow the browser to continue rendering the rest of the page and draw the image into that area when the resource is available as opposed to forcing the browser to infer the size after downloading the resource and re-rendering the entire page but as far as CSS vs HTML, it shouldn't make a difference.
You can simply specify a width for an image by adding {width=123px}. Don't introduce whitespace in between the brackets:![image description]('your-image.png'){width=250px} Another option is to use knitr::include_graphics: ```{r, fig.cap="image description", out.width = '50%'} knitr::include_graphics('your-image.png') ```

I have been working with imaging for 8 years now in scanning software, batch conversion of millions of documents and pages, and OCR and others, and not disposing of bitmaps except under the most trivial scenarios will create memory leaks, inefficient code, and software that will grind to a halt (crash, performance, and the like).

Actually, the goal is to reduce file size, so I see image compression as a solution. But, I know that uploaded images are going to be displayed on my website, every time at the same place, and I know the dimension of this display area (eg. 200x400). So, I could resize the image to fit those dimensions, thus reducing file size.
This approach is different than setecs answer, using this the image area will be constant and defined by you (leaving empty spaces either horizontally or vertically depending on the div size and image aspect ratio), while setecs answer will get you a box that exactly the size of the scaled image (without empty spaces).

You could change the size of the new image by just deleting a bit of code and defining the image size and you can only figure out how to do this if you look at the code carefully. I defined this size: x, y = foo.size x2, y2 = math.floor(x-50), math.floor(y-20)
For the JPEG and MPEG image formats, quality is 1 (lowest image quality and highest compression) to 100 (best quality but least effective compression). The default is to use the estimated quality of your input image if it can be determined, otherwise 92. You may use quality lower than the default 92 to reduce the size, e.g. 72 as:
I want to add the image in the Jupyter notebook and I want to have particular height and width. When I try to add the image using ![](img.png) the code is adding the complete image but as per the image dimension and I don't have control over it. I try to use ![](img.png =200x100) but then the image does not appear.
