Debut and early years. Upon reading his poems, he was signed on as a lyricist by the director Bharathiraja for the film Nizhalgal in the year 1980. The first song he wrote in his career, was "Pon Maalai Pozhuthu", which was composed by "Isaignani" Ilaiyaraaja and sung by S.P. Balasubrahmanyam.
Jul 13, 2023 · The book was required reading at Women’s Christian College, granting Vairamuthu the distinction of being a writer whose work was included in a curriculum while he was still a student. Madras University granted him a Master of Arts in Tamil literature after he concluded a two-year programme.
Vairamuthu is a famous Indian poet and lyricist who has written verses for a number of Tamil films. His first lyric was written for the film Nizhalgal for the song, Ponmaalai Pozhudhu. By January 2009 he has written more than 5800 songs.

When his paper on Andal became a controversy, he expressed regret but stood his ground on the views he had expressed.
Vairamuthu was born to Ramaswamythevar and Angammal of Mettur in a middle-class family. When he was four, the village gave way to Vaigai Dam and the family moved to Vadugapatti village, a farming community in Theni near Periyakulam. The ambience of the village is said to have inspired him to write poems.

Entry into Literary arena. While working at the Tamil Nadu Official Language Commission, he wrote his first anthology of poems. Soon he entered the glorious field of cinema as a lyricist in 1980 by film director Bharathi Raja in his film ‘Nizhalgal’ (Shadows) and so far written over 7500 film lyrics.
Poet-lyricist Vairamuthu, a five-time National Award winner and Sahitya Akademi Award recipient, is now bringing out a compilation of his work spanning nearly three decades.
