Sep 13, 2024 · It was named in honor of the eighth governor of Illinois, Thomas Ford and was created a county by act of the legislature on February 17, 1869. The first settlers in Ford County located at Trinkle’s Grove near Paxton in 1835 before the county was organized.

The river is believed to get its name from a Pottawatomie word “Sain-guee-mon,” translated as “where there is plenty to eat.”
History. The site of Gibson City was purchased and platted by Jonathan B. Lott in 1869. In 1870, Lott built a home and a post office there, and several stores and a grain elevator were constructed. Lott named the place Gibson after the maiden name of his wife, Margaret Gibson Lott, and City was added later by the post office department.
