Felling is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Gateshead in Tyne and Wear, England. Historically part of County Durham, the town became part of the metropolitan borough of Gateshead in 1974.

The Urban District of Felling, preceded 30 years earlier by Felling Local Board lasted a mere 80 years, 1894 until 1974 when Local Government Reorganisation resulted in Gateshead being expanded to include The Felling in the East, Birtley in the South and all the way to Crawcrook in the West
Felling, a large village and an ecclesiastical parish, formed in 1866 from the chapelry of St Mary, Heworth, and is part of the old parish of Jarrow, Durham. The village stands on the N.E.R., 1½ mile SE of Gateshead, with which it is connected by a steam tramway; has grown of late years from two hamlets to its present condition.

The Felling. The County Durham land, south of the River Tyne, was controlled by the Church, through the Bishop of Durham, who gave, and later commercially sold, the rights of use, to those he chose. A big slice of the original Gateshead immediately south of the Tyne was taken up by The Bishop's own Hunting Park.

Felling is a town in the north of County Durham, falling within the conurbation spreading out from Gateshead and its neighbouring towns. It is one of the largest urban areas here beside Gateshead itself. Felling was formed by the coalescing of three villages in the 19th century.
