  4. Felling, a large village and an ecclesiastical parish, formed in 1866 from the chapelry of St Mary, Heworth, and is part of the old parish of Jarrow, Durham. The village stands on the N.E.R., 1½ mile SE of Gateshead, with which it is connected by a steam tramway; has grown of late years from two hamlets to its present condition.
