Columbus is a consolidated city-county located on the west-central border of the U.S. state of Georgia. Columbus lies on the Chattahoochee River directly across from Phenix City, Alabama.

Founded in 1828 and carved out of the wilderness, it had by 1840 become a leading inland cotton port with a thriving textile.
It was an important shipping port and in 1918, became home to the U.S. Army's Camp Benning (now Fort Moore). Set along the Chattahoochee River on the border with Alabama, Columbus has become a popular spot for outdoor lovers with the longest urban whitewater course in the world and a zip line across the river.
Oct 16, 2023 · From a distance, Columbus might seem like any of Georgia’s quaint little towns. It’s filled with historic buildings, mom-and-pop shops, and historic battlefields dating back to the Civil War. There are fireworks on the Fourth of July in the city square. You can order grits and apple pie year-round.
Columbus is the second-largest city in Georgia. When I discovered Columbus’s treasure trove of attractions, I knew why it’s growing rapidly in popularity. I’ve visited many times, some comped press trips, but my opinions are my own. Here are some reasons to visit Columbus.
