Located just north of the Charles River, Charlestown is Boston’s oldest neighborhood. Originally known as Mishawum, Charlestown proper was founded in 1628 and included what is now Woburn, Malden, Stoneham, and South Medford. On June 17, 1775, Charlestown was the site of one of the most important battles of the Revolutionary War.
