    Armentières (French pronunciation: [aʁmɑ̃tjɛʁ]; West Flemish: Armentiers, Picard: Armintîre) is a commune in the Nord department in the Hauts-de-France region in northern France. It is part of the Métropole Européenne de Lille. The motto of the town is Pauvre mais fière (Poor but proud).

    • Beffroi d’Armentières. The indisputable must-see in Armentières is the red brick and limestone belfry, which is attached to the town hall. This UNESCO-listed building echoes the history of the town, having been wrecked and then proudly rebuilt, first in the middle ages and then after the First World War.
    • Église Saint Vaast. Armentières’ church is on a cathedral-like scale with a bell-tower that soars to 83 metres, the highest point in the town. Once again, the church’s story is one of destruction and rebirth, going right back to the 800s.
