Here’s a guide to some places where food and drink are cheap, the atmosphere is relaxed and you can get a taste of Venice as a down-to-earth Italian town.
- San Marco. San Marco is the busiest part of the city because it’s where most of the important sights and best views are concentrated: St Mark’s Square (Piazza San Marco) and Basilica, the Doge’s Palace, the Bridge of Sighs, the views out from the waterfront to San Giorgio Maggiore and across to Santa Maria della Salute are all within a 200-metre radius.
- Castello. The sestier of Castello, the largest in Venice, extends from the Rio de Palazzo which runs beneath the Bridge of Sighs, all the way to the reclaimed island of Sant’Elena, the easternmost point of the city proper.
- Cannaregio. Cannaregio Venice is the first part of the city that many see, situated in the northwestern part of the city and home to Venezia Santa Lucia railway station.
- Santa Croce. Santa Croce has Piazzale Roma, the bus station and arrival point for many, but the rest of the district tends to be overlooked by visitors in favour of the more popular sights at the other end of the Grand Canal.
- San Marco, the best area to stay in Venice. The lagoon city’s oldest and most famous quarter, San Marco (alternately dubbed St. Mark or St. Mark’s Square) has long been the beating heart of Venice.
- Dorsoduro, where to stay in Venice for nightlife. Venice’s university district, Dorsoduro makes up one of the six main sestieri in central Venice. Thanks to its prominent student population, Dorsoduro tends to be less expensive and tourist-laden than Venice’s other districts, with a number of well-priced luxury hotel options.
- San Polo, perfect location. Venice’s smallest sestiere or subdivision, the San Polo district borders with the Canale Grande, Dorsoduro, and Santa Croce.
- Santa Croce, the main transportation hub and a very convenient area. One of Venice’s main districts, Santa Croce has retained much of its off-the-beaten-track charm, with locals and visitors most likely to mingle together in the area.
Aug 30, 2024 · San Marco is definitely one of the best places to stay in Venice, especially for first-time visitors. It’s within walking distance of all the major tourist attractions and is a thriving tourist hub in the heart of Venice. This neighborhood is always overflowing with people.
