  1. 3 days ago · Directed By: James Cameron. True Lies (1994)70%. #10. 73741%. Critics Consensus: If it doesn't reach the heights of director James Cameron's and star Arnold Schwarzenegger's previous collaborations, True Lies still packs enough action and humor into its sometimes absurd plot to entertain.

    • 'Terminator 2: Judgment Day' (1991) With The Terminator and Aliens, you could say that James Cameron ruled the 1980s, or at least the decade from 1984 onwards.
    • 'Aliens' (1986) James Cameron knows how to do a sequel right, and Aliens was the first time he demonstrated his uncanny ability to continue a story in satisfying and dramatic ways.
    • 'The Terminator' (1984) To many (perhaps even James Cameron himself), The Terminator might count as his "real" feature debut, and unlike his Piranha movie, the filmmaker certainly hasn't disowned this one.
    • 'Avatar' (2009) Between the disaster movie at sea that was Titanic, and the water-heavy Avatar: The Way of Water came 2009's Avatar, which didn't have quite as much water, but ultimately proved to be the most successful of the three at the box office.

    • Titanic (1997) A staggering technical feat and a heartbreaking romance combined for this thrilling blockbuster, which is the epitome of Cameron’s MO.
    • Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) The same again, but Schwarzenegger’s the hero this time. Terminator 2 could’ve been a shameless retread. Instead, it’s one of Cameron’s masterpieces, where a shotgun-toting Schwarzenegger works to protect Sarah and her adolescent son from the liquid metal T-1000, chillingly played by Robert Patrick.
    • The Abyss (1989) One can view Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio touching the aquatic extra-terrestrial in pure wonder as a summation of Cameron’s career. Manufacturing ways for us to feel like we can extend a hand and touch something not of this world that’s completely vivid and life-like.
    • Aliens (1986) Following a perfect entity like Alien would seem like a fool’s errand for most, but most aren’t James Cameron. After years of chasing the project, Cameron got the green light to continue Ripley’s story after The Terminator, proceeding to make a louder, bloodier, and bigger version of Ridley Scott’s horror movie.
    • Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) Perhaps the greatest compliment we can pay to Terminator 2: Judgment Day is that the special effects still hold up in a big way.
    • Titanic (1997) Titanic is one of those rare movies that achieved a nearly mythic status almost immediately upon its release. Much of this is largely due to Cameron's painstaking recreation of the titular ship.
    • Aliens (1986) Among horror and sci-fi fans, there is an endless debate: Is Alien or Aliens the better movie? In reality, the debate is moot because these are entirely different kinds of films.
    • The Terminator (1984) There has been a critical tendency to examine The Terminator as a spiritual follow-up to Cameron's Xenogenesis. And certainly, there are surface similarities: As with Xenogenesis, Terminator's characters include a strong female lead, a man trying to save humanity, and a killer robot.
  3. With Avatar: The Way of Water coming to cinemas pretty dang soon (slated for Dec 16, FYI), we wanted to take a look at some of the best James Cameron movies of all time. The pure brilliance of pretty much all James Cameron films cannot be overstated, from Avatar to Terminator, Titanic, to Aliens and True Lies, almost everything Cameron directs turns into movie gold.
