Vadodara (Gujarati: [ʋəˈɽodɾɑ] ⓘ) formerly, Baroda, is a major city in the Indian state of Gujarat. It serves as the administrative headquarters of the Vadodara district and is situated on the banks of the Vishwamitri River, 141 km (88 mi) from the state capital of Gandhinagar.
Today, Vadodara is known as the ‘Sanskari Nagari’ or ‘City of Culture,’ a title earned due to its vibrant cultural scene and historical prominence. It holds a special place as the cultural capital of Gujarat, a hub of art, music, and intellectual pursuits.
The city was once called Chandravati, after its ruler Raja Chandan, then Viravati, the abode of the brave, and then Vadpatra because of the abundance of banyan trees on the banks of the Vishwamitri. From Vadpatra it derived its present name Baroda or Vadodara.
