What happened to Jóhann Jóhannsson? So clearly he was replaced by a new soundtrack team very late in the process — indeed he’s even out of the credits. What confused me is that a lot of the ambient soundtrack was not only textbook J.J., but there were several noises/voices that sounded exactly like those from Arrival.

As part of the terms of the contract, Johansson is prohibited from speaking about his departure or what happened. He is still listed as having worked on the soundtrack, to what extent, don't know. Now, BR2049 is one of my favorite films ever. It blew me away. I loved the soundtrack. I've always looked at Hans Zimmer sort of side eyed however.

Johannsson has previously collaborated with the film's director, Denis Villeneuve, on films such as Prisoners, Sicario, and Arrival so it only felt natural for him to be brought aboard for this project.
