Leonia is a borough in Bergen County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey. As of the 2020 United States census, the borough's population was 9,304, [10][11] an increase of 367 (+4.1%) from the 2010 census count of 8,937, [20][21] which in turn reflected an increase of 23 (+0.3%) from the 8,914 counted in the 2000 census. [22] .
A perfect place to live, work, and play, Leonia is home to beautiful historic housing neighborhoods, a walkable central business district with transit options, a fabulous public school system, and plenty of nearby open space and recreational opportunities, including Overpeck County Park.
The earliest settlement in Leonia dates to 1668 when Samuel Edsall bought 1,872 acres of land from Chief Oratam of the Hackensack Indians. The land extended from the Hudson River to Overpeck Creek. Other Englishmen purchasing large tracts of land around the same time were Nicholas Verlett and John Berry.
