Sep 26, 2006 · The Road is a truly disturbing book; it is absorbing, mystifying and completely harrowing. Simply because it shows us how man could act given the right circumstances; it’s a terrifying concept because it could also be a true one. It isn’t a book that gives you any answers, you have to put the pieces together and presume. For whatever reason, be it nuclear war or environmental collapse, the world has gone to hell.

Nov 25, 2009 · The Road paints a grim and genuine picture of the dangers and greed of a world surviving the collapse of society and hope. The Road is a realistic and super depressing depiction of a post-apocalyptic world. Viggo Mortensen’s portrayal of an unyielding father doing whatever he can to keep his son alive and prepare him for survival is gripping and powerful. This movie made me want to hold my kids close, hug them tight, and thank the Lord we don’t live in that situation.

The Road is a novel of hopelessness and despair, with some dim hope keeping the main characters, a man and his son, alive. Mostly, the characters live dreadfully. They sleep cold under a tarp, they hide from cannibals, they starve for days on end—and yet they keep going. The man and the boy’s desperate march to the coast, to warmth, may all be for naught, but they make the journey anyway. The main conflict of the book is a simple one: stay alive.
