PUKAR is an independent research collective and urban knowledge producing institution, based in Mumbai that conducts multi-sectoral, cross-disciplinary, community based, participatory action research on issues related to urbanization and globalization.
PUKAR is one of the few international, independent research collectives that is based in Global South working on the power of the idea of “Right To Research”. PUKAR works at the intersection of academic research and community based participatory research.
This study explored the ways in which public spaces are perceived, experienced and interpreted by both men and women, but in particular by women. Public space are largely but not exclusively buses, trains, parks, maidans (open grounds), footpaths, subways, bazaars, restaurants and theatres.

E-Sevak Initiative for Better Governance. Ford Foundation Palghar was carved out of Thane district and was recently minted (August 2014) as a tribal district in state of Maharashtra that is located about 120-140 KMs north of Mumbai city along the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway.
Lead- Youth & Urban Knowledge Production. A quiet, unassuming person who believes strongly in the values of equity, equality and social justice, Arvind joined PUKAR in 2016 as a facilitator for the flagship program of PUKAR, the Youth Fellowship.
Accounts Officer. Possessing experience of 38 years in the field of accounts, Dilip Makwana serves his expertise as the Assistant- Accounts at PUKAR. He has previously worked with export/import companies, engineering and construction companies, etc. His desire to learn accounting for a trust led him to join PUKAR.
But experience of PUKAR’s Mental health, TB, Diarrhoea and Immunization projects has imparted not just research skills but critical skills in communications and community building in Nizam.
A unique opportunity offered by PUKAR for Mumbai's Youth to understand and experience the city through research. This is a year-long activity-based weekend course which offers an avenue to identify, understand and study the issues of local communities.
PUKAR’s work draws upon the everyday realities of the city including the politics of space and identity through the lens of youth. It promotes research as a right for everyone and uses it as a tool for pedagogy, advocacy, intervention and transformation of the youth, the communities and the city at large.
