Perched on Sri Lanka’s southwest coast, Galle wears its history on its sleeve. Windswept beaches and nodding palms surround its colonial-era showpiece, a 16th-century Portuguese-built fort, while the rest of the city is trimmed with Dutch-style houses, quirky shops, whitewashed mansions, and heritage museums.
Galle was the final stop of our Sri Lanka itinerary – a route that looped us through the island’s southern sites, from Ella’s lush tea country to Hiriketiya’s offbeat surf culture to, finally, the sunny ramparts of Galle. There are so many things to do in Galle, even though the walled fort area itself is only 130 square acres.
We spent part of our month-long adventure across Sri Lanka exploring Galle, and it might have been the place that surprised us the most. Galle is a beautiful cultural hub in southern Sri Lanka steeped in history, and there are so many things to do in this small colonial town. The architecture reflects its history of over 200 years of spice trading, and the remnants of this colonial history are noticeable at every turn.
