    Tirana

Your trip will likely start in the capital city of Tirana. While you can’t really go on about its beauty, there are a few interesting spots in Tirana to check out. You can climb up the Piramida. This derelict building has become the symbol of Tirana. It was being built to be a museum honoring the post-WWII dictator of Albania, but after the fall of communism, that plan was abandoned, and it’s now home to graffiti artists and skateboarders. The local kids like to climb it and slide down. Head...

    Berat

Berat is known as the “City of A Thousand Windows,” and is a UNESCO World Heritage City. It is a historical village with a lovely riverside promenade, fantastic eateries, and a stunning mountaintop castle complex. The Berat Castle (The Kala) functions just as a walled city would have a thousand years ago. It’s still filled with beautiful shops, selling traditional wares, and the unassuming St. Mary Teresa Church (the Museum Ikon Onufri) has artwork and woodcarving that only Venice’s St. Marks...

    Gjirokastra

Gjirokastra is another UNESCO World Heritage Site City, with city walls standing since at least the 3rd century. The city is stacked on several small hills and has lovely cobblestone streets, winding alleyways, and famous Ottoman-era homes in mint condition. Make sure to climb the hill to tour Gjirokastra Castle. Unlike Berat, this one is small and doesn’t still function as a city. It is a fortress and museum with wonderful information about the history of the area and one of the best views i...

Don’t talk about how everything is cheap.

As discussed, Albania can be a difficult place to live. There are 3 million Albanians in-country and 10 million living elsewhere. You will encounter many Albanians who are dumbstruck as to why you would want to visit their country. Their view is tainted by difficult experiences that you as a tourist won’t encounter or understand. Just enjoy the prices, and don’t go on about them with locals.

Don’t be surprised if you witness an argument.

Albanians are very passionate, and they oft display this passion on public transit. Don’t be surprised if you witness heated (or what appears to be heated) conversations in public. They are likely just talking politics!

If you are looking for an incredible travel experience, in an off-the-beaten-path destination, Albania is top of the world list. It has the fantastic food, historical sites, and hospitality of Turkey at 1/3 the price. Plus, it is one of those rare places that has plenty to see without being tainted by mass tourism. You can experience first-class re...
