Dec 22, 2011 · Broyles was killed and used as the mass sent Over Here to replace the Olivia from Over There (i.e. Fauxlivia) when they brought her back Over There. It seemed like his death was a key part of the events of the escalating conflict between the two Earths.
Spoiler took season 4. Question. So Broyels from Red Universe died protecting Olivia while she was trying to escape to Blue universe. So later the villains replaced him with a shape shifter and he had been operating like that.

Due to points 1 and 2, Olivia never recruited alt Broyles to help her escape since that whole series of events was different and she was not being experimented on. Ipso facto, alt Broyles did not die. Also, Peter never caught Fauxlivia in her lie.
The orange verse is a slightly different timeline in which redPeter died as a child when Walter brought him Blueside. In the orangeverse, Col. Broyles did not die.
In both timelines, Colonel Broyles compromises his allegiance to serve two other powers: the Prime Universe Fringe Division itself—in the original timeline—in order to save both universes. He did so out of sympathy for and in order to save Olivia Dunham's life.
