First edition cover of Bulldog Drummond. Hugh "Bulldog" Drummond is a fictional character, created by H. C. McNeile and published under his pen name "Sapper". Following McNeile's death in 1937, the novels were continued by Gerard Fairlie.
McNeile wrote ten Bulldog Drummond novels, as well as three plays and a screenplay. McNeile interspersed his Drummond work with other novels and story collections that included two characters who appeared as protagonists in their own works, Jim Maitland and Ronald Standish.

Bull-dog Drummond (later Bulldog Drummond) was the first Bulldog Drummond novel. It was published in 1920 and written by H. C. McNeile under the pen name Sapper. The following year it was adapted into a play of the same title starring Gerald du Maurier .

The Bulldog Drummond stories follow Captain Hugh "Bulldog" Drummond, D.S.O., M.C., a wealthy former WWI officer of the fictional His Majesty's Royal Loamshire Regiment, who, after the First World War, spends his new-found leisure time as a private detective.
