Athawale's career kickstarted when he joined the Dalit Panthers' movement in the seventies. However, it was only in 1990, when the Dalit leader became a member of Maharashtra Legislative Council. In the nineties, he also became a Cabinet minister in the Maharashtra govt.
He was a member of Maharashtra Legislative Council from 1990 to 1996, and also served as a cabinet minister. He served MLA from Maharashtra multiple times, before he joined national level politics. He contested Lok Sabha elections for the first time in 1998 and won it.
