At the age of six, he lost his father and younger sister to typhus fever and was raised by his mother, step-father and grandmother.
Early Life. Henry Bradley Plant was born on October 27, 1819, in Branford, Connecticut. He came from a farming family. His first job was at the New Haven Steamboat Company. He worked on ships traveling between New York and New Haven, Connecticut. Eventually, Plant became an expert in the express shipping business.
During the 1880’s, Henry Bradley Plant was building an empire of railroads, steamships and hotels. He wanted that empire to have a palace and that palace was the Tampa Bay Hotel.
