Wilbert Vere Awdry OBE (15 June 1911 – 21 March 1997), often credited as Rev. W. Awdry, was an English Anglican minister, railway enthusiast, and children's author. He is best remembered as the creator of Thomas the Tank Engine and several other characters who appeared in his Railway Series.

At the start, Thomas was a pilot train who longed for more responsibility by bigger trains like Gordon and eventually proves himself enough to get his own line. Awdry wrote a total of twenty-six books in the Railway Series until 1972.
The character was created by Wilbert Vere Awdry in a series of children’s books based on stories he had told to his son, Christopher. The first of the series, The Three Railway Engines (1945), captured the imaginations of British children and created a vast audience for Thomas’s continuing adventures.
