May 27, 2019 · The Kashi temple was first razed to the ground by the army of Qutb-ud-din Aibak in 1194 AD when he defeated the Raja of Kannauj. It was rebuilt again during Iltutmish's reign but was brought down again. It was rebuilt again by Raja Mann Singh under Akbar's patronage.
Raja Man Singh built the temple during Akbar’s rule, but orthodox Hindus boycotted it as he had let the Mughal emperors marry within his family. Raja Todar Mal further re-built the temple with Akbar’s funding at its original site in 1585. In 1669 CE, Emperor Aurangzeb destroyed the temple and built the Gyanvapi Mosque in its place.
The present structure is believed to have been built by Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore in the 18th century. The temple has undergone multiple renovations and expansions over the centuries, each contributing to its grandeur and significance.
Although there were multiple plans by many rulers to rebuild the Kashi Vishwanath temple it was in 1780 when the Queen of Indoor, Malhar Rao’s daughter-in-law Ahilyabai Holkar decided to construct the present temple adjacent to the mosque.
