The coastal area of the Eastern Cape Province lies directly between subtropical KwaZulu Natal and the Mediterranean Western Cape. Its inland area is bisected by the great escarpment, and the northern areas have lofty plains of the Plateau and the Great Karoo.
The northern regions of the Eastern Cape are much cooler. The shoreline of this province extends from the Umtamvuna River in KwaZulu Natal, to the Storms River mouth on the scenic garden route, in the west, and stretching inland, to the North, bordering on Lesotho.
The former Eastern Cape enclave of the town of Umzimkulu and its hinterland have been incorporated into KwaZulu-Natal following the 12th amendment of the Constitution of South Africa. The amendment also made other changes to the southern border of the province.
