A recovering alcoholic named Charles Dederich started the program, and his methods “helped” addicts by humiliating and isolating them, forcing them into hard labor and keeping them from sleep, according to Mother Jones.

    • There were no treatment plans in the early days. Clinicians were not even employed at the CEDU programs until 1995 or 1998 (depending on the program).
    • Smooshing was the practice of laying on one another and often included males and females, and often mixed staff with students. This was not required.
    • CEDU did not have licensed clinicians until 1998. CEDU programs were not clinical in nature when they first began. They were, at best, behavior modification programs with levels and “workshops” that were not clinical nor did they have any clinical underpinnings.
